Not everyone who learned to speak fluent Japanese studied in a classroom. With all the resources available online these days, it’s easier than ever to learn Japanese on your own.

Take me, for example—I started from scratch and got to an advanced level with a realistic study plan, online courses, a notebook and some elbow grease.

These are my tips for how to learn Japanese as a beginner, along with some well-known expressions and helpful resources.

1. Start with pronunciation, core vocabulary and basic grammar

First, you want to build your Japanese foundations.
